I arrived a little late for the 桜平 parking area but was able to get one of the last spots in the parking area just below.

The start of a wonderful day. This is the junction of the 桜平 parking area and the lot just 800 meters below. The drive up was no joke. Little hard on the Demio.

The approach snakes around a lovely river giving me some nice BGM for the first section of the hike.

You can see the discoloration of the rocks. A slight yellowing from the high sulfur content.

If I'm not mistaken, we are looking at the central alps.
Always good to double check that you are going the right way.
The walk of up the river was a little bit easy but the sound of the river was invigorating early in the morning

The オーレン小屋 lodge was pretty sweet. If I wasn't so pumped for to make good time, this would have been a great place for food and drink.

I decided to change from my original plan and do a reverse lap. Happy that I did because it was far less crowded.

The first checkpoint at the top was...stunning. It's amazing what kind of view you can get after a few hours.

In the distance you can see 編笠山 and 権現山, the other two peaks that I have climbed.

The ridge line was an unexpected treat to look at. Loads of folks trekking down to the hut, I think.

Time to make my way up to 硫黄岳. Just a little further.
The view down the ridge line was spectacular.
Mt. Fuji wasn't visible today but the view was amazing, regardless.

I tried to shoot between two rocks but my heart just about leapt out of my chest when I looked down to see the sheer drop off below me.

Totally unexpected here. Just beyond the peak of 硫黄岳 was a formation that resembles Uluru rock in Australia.

Time for a much needed lunch break...at 9:52am! ha.

At the top were large loose stones. It felt like the top of Mt. Fuji, which makes sense given that this range is also an extinct volcano.

Another missed chance for an onsen hop/
Ok...so I totally thought this was a bear. I shouted "雲" but should have said, "熊." I was SO scared that I had just seen my first mountain bear. Thankfully this deer was quite friendly.
