スケールが違った。


天気が良さそうなのと、リサーチの結果10月上旬まではなんとかいけるとわかったので、急遽念願のTMBへ。
授業の関係で休みが4日間しか取れず（結局3日で帰った）、無理やり一周しようと思っていたが、これは無茶だった。
また前日に同じ寮の人にポールを借りようとしたら、一緒に行きたいと言われたので、テント泊や本格的なハイキングが初めての人と2人で行くことになり一周するのは早々に諦めた。
後から思ったことだが、これは山頂を目指すものでもないので、ゆっくり自然を楽しみながら自分のペースで歩くのがTMBの醍醐味であると思う。
前日夜Night GAを使ってジュネーブに行き、友人の家に泊めてもらい、朝6:30発のシャモニー行きのバスにのる。
寮から10フラン程度でシャモニーに行くことができる事実に興奮する。
シャモニーに着くとどんよりと曇っていたが、予報を信じて歩き続ける。最初の峠まではロープウェイを使っている記録も多いが、10月には営業していない。
後から気付いたことだがこれはTMBにおけるバリエーションルートらしい。本当はもっと楽だったのかもしれない。
スタート地点では単独のフランス人女性と会ったが、彼女は10日で行うらしい。
一つ目の峠に着くと、猟犬と猟銃をもった人たちがいるので驚いた。またモンブランの山頂へとつながるトレッキングルートがあり、いつか登ってみたいと思った。
街と違い山道にはトヨタと三菱の車が圧倒的に多く、日本車が信頼されていることを感じた。

基本的にツールドモンブランは峠へ登り、街へ降るを繰り返す。要所要所にレストランや小屋があり、繁忙期は適宜自由に休むことができるのだと思う。
10月はほとんどやっていなかった。

途中で休憩を取る。あまりにも美しいのでマットをひいて1時間ほど昼寝をした。
昼寝から起きると、小屋に住むおじいさんが、コーヒーを飲むかと誘ってくれた。美味しいコーヒーをいただくと、おまけにチョコレートまでくれて最後にはなんとワインまでくれた。
ワインはGenepiというそうで、おじいさんが作ったもののようだった。少し独特な風味かつとても強いお酒だったが、美味しく飲むことができた。
後から高額請求をされないかヒヤヒヤしたか、される事はなくただの優しい人だった。
現地の人はフランス語のみ喋れる人が多いため、自分とスムーズな意思疎通が難しかった。フランス語をもう少しだけでもしゃべることができたらと少し歯痒い思いをした。

Les Contamines-Montjoine におりるとスーパーがあり、パンとハムを買い足した。
ちなみに私は日本から持ってきたジェットボイルと合致するガス缶を見つけることができなかったため、ガスなしテント泊を強いられた。そのため朝昼夜全てパンとチーズとハムとチョコレートですましていた。朝と夜が寒すぎること以外は、意外と飽きなかった。

スーパーで買い出しを終え、歩いているとフランス人に話しかけられた。彼はローカルガイドなようでショートカットの道と景色の良いテントサイトを教えてくれた。感謝をして別れると数分後にまた会い、仕事から息子や娘に関する身の上話をしてくれた。彼によるとジュネーブは薬物売買等もあり治安があまり良くないらしい。スイスで治安が悪いと感じたことはなかったので驚きだった。

元々Refuge de la balmeまで進む予定だったが雨がばらついてきたことや、あまりペースが上がらなかっため一つ前のテントサイトにテントを立てた。太陽が山で隠れ始めると、どんどん冷えていって寒くなる。昼は半袖で行けるが夕方はフリースとソフトシェルを着ていた。夜はとにかく寒いのでダウンを着た。
テントサイト着くと、誰もいなかっため1番平なところに建てた。
チェコ出身の人だけが後からやってきた。彼は30kgの荷物をもってゆっくり歩いているといっていた。

次に降りた街（Les cheapies）で、食事を買い足すまたは、レストランで食事を取ろうと考えていたが、どこも営業が終了していた。レストランに人がいたので、飲み物を買わせてくれないかと聞くと、営業は終わってるけど5ユーロで大きいコーラ（1.25L）を売ってると言ったので買うことに。
買う前に少し雑談して、日本から来たことを伝えた瞬間、笑顔になり、ワンピースの話をしていたら無料でコーラをくれた。日本に対して良いイメージを作り上げて来た先人の日本人に感謝の気持ちを改めて抱く。自分もこれからはもっと礼節を重んじた振る舞いを続ける必要があると思った。
この時飲んだコーラは本当に美味しかった。
海外のコーラは炭酸が強く感じる。
Les cheapiesからの道は舗装された道で夏は無料のシャトルバスが出ているようだが、例によって10月は営業していない。途中大きな鳥が来て感動していたら、自転車に乗っていたフランス人に珍しい鳥であることを教えてもらった。
とぼとぼ歩いていると、後ろから車がきたので指を出してみるとヒッチハイクに成功した。
スズキの車に乗ったフランスの老夫婦にロード1時間分くらいを送ってもらった。
これがなければこの日のテント場に着く頃には真っ暗になっていただろう。

ロード区間を終えてまた登山道に入る。
この区間は一面綺麗な紅葉をしていて、絨毯のようで美しい。また人がいないため、絶景を独り占めしている気分になる。

峠を登ると、ついにフランスとイタリアの国境にたどり着く。久しぶりにモンブランが顔を出してくれてテンションが上がる。

イタリアサイドに来てからはイタリア人が増えてチャオと挨拶することが増えた。
興味深いことにイタリアサイドであったフランス人に、チャオと挨拶すると、ボンジュールと返してきて、お国柄を感じた。

2日目の夜はCabane du Combalでテントを張ることに。やけに多く人がいてしかも珍しく中国人がいると思ったら、中国のアウトドアブランドの撮影をしていた（名前を聞いたが忘れてしまった）。
案内係？のガイドのイタリア人と話してオススメのテント設営場所を教えてもらい少し登ったところでテントを立てる。
この日のテントサイト地は標高2000mあったこともあり、夜はどんどん冷える。

翌朝起きるとテントが凍っていた。相変わらずの晴天に感謝と感動をしながら出発すると、イタリア人が残っていて、コーヒーがいるかと声をかけてくれた。
ガスが無かったため、お湯なしで生活してきて、さらには朝に氷を見た自分にとって感動的な提案だった。
美味しくコーヒーをいただくと、ケーキ（crostata）まで出してくれた。
お言葉に甘えてコーヒーを二杯目までしっかりいただくと、気づけば親切とお湯で心からあたたまることできた。

3日間通して、フランス人にもイタリア人にもとても親切にしてもらい、これから人への親切を忘れないことを誓う。

次の峠に登るとモンブランが美しく見える。テントを乾かすためにテントを立てて休むことに。あまりに美しい景色。本物のアルプスはスケールが違う。

途中ソロでTMBを行う中国人と出会い、コルマールとシャモニーのトンネルがクローズしていることを教えてもらう（このくらいは調べておくべきだったと反省...)。
シャモニーからお土産を買って帰ろうと思っていたが、イタリアサイドから帰ることに。
途中湖があり、逆さモンブランを取る。
そこにいたイタリア人におすすめの帰り方を教えてもらう。弾丸登山だったためあまりにもリサーチ不足だったが、少しずつ情報を補うことができた。
とぼとぼ歩き続け、ようやくコルマールに着く。
大きな街で文化的な美しさもあった。
コルマールでピザを食べて帰路につく。
スイスの週末は夜通し電車が動いているのでNight GAと相性がよくて学生に優しい。

総括して
アルプスの壮大さと美しさ、人々の優しさに触れたハイキングだった。
10月は基本休業していて、食糧補給等もしづらいが、
人が少ない分テント泊自体はどこでもできるくらい自由な雰囲気がある。また小屋の営業が終了していることもあるせいか、現地の人のサービス精神も凄かった。

ただ今年の10月は異常に晴れが続いてたようで、例年はこんな快適ではないし雪もあるそうなので、注意が必要だと思う。

また挨拶程度でなくもう少し言葉を喋れたら良かったなと思ったので、英語以外もDuolingoを始めようと思う。事前調べが浅かったことに加えフランス語の地名を覚えることが難しく、どこに泊まったのって会話の際毎回苦労した。

弾丸の計画に当日のノリで来てくれた友人に感謝。
というか初のテント泊でこれは過酷だったと思う。

来て良かった。
そしてまた来ると思う。
次はゆっくり時間をかけて一周したい。

The scale of the real Alps is just on another level

With the good weather forecast and research suggesting the Tour du Mont Blanc was possible until early October, I rushed to go on the trek I'd been dreaming of. I only had four days off due to classes, and initially intended to force myself to complete the entire loop, but I soon realized that would be impossible. When I tried to borrow hiking poles from a roommate the night before, he asked to join, so I ended up going with someone who was completely new to both tent camping and serious hiking. We quickly abandoned the idea of completing the whole loop.
Looking back, I think the real joy of the TMB isn't about rushing to the finish line, but enjoying the nature at our own pace.

I took the Night GA to Geneva the night before, stayed at my friend's place, and then caught the 6:30 AM bus to Chamonix. I was thrilled that I could get to Chamonix for only about 10 francs from my dorm. When we arrived in Chamonix, it was cloudy and gloomy, but I trusted the forecast and kept walking. Many records show people using a cable car for the first pass, but it wasn't operating in October. I later realized the route we took was a variant of the TMB, and the main route might have been easier. At the starting point, we met a solo French woman who planned to complete the loop in 10 days.

At the first pass, I was surprised to see people with hunting dogs and rifles. There was also a trekking route connecting to the summit of Mont Blanc, which I hoped to climb someday. Unlike in the city, the mountain roads were dominated by Toyota and Mitsubishi cars, a sign of the trust in Japanese cars.

The TMB generally involves a pattern of climbing to a pass and descending to a town. There are restaurants and huts at key locations, and I imagine that during the busy season, you can take a break whenever you like. However, most of them were closed in October.

I took a break midway. The scenery was so stunning that I laid out my mat and took a nap for about an hour. When I woke up, an old man who lived in a nearby hut offered me a cup of coffee. I enjoyed the delicious coffee, and he kindly gave me a chocolate on top of that, and finally, even a glass of wine. He called the wine Genepi, and it seemed to be homemade. It had a slightly unique flavor and was quite strong, but it was delicious. I was worried he'd charge me an extra money, but he didn't?he was just a genuinely kind person.

Many of the locals only spoke French, making smooth communication difficult for me. I felt a little frustrated that I couldn't speak even a little French.

In Les Contamines-Montjoie, we found a supermarket and bought more bread and ham. Incidentally, I couldn't find a gas can compatible with the Jetboil I brought from Japan, so I was forced to camp without a stove. As a result, every meal?breakfast, lunch, and dinner?consisted of only bread, cheese, ham, and chocolate. I was not tired of the menu.

After grocery shopping, a French man spoke to us while we were walking. He was a local guide and showed us a shortcut and a good tent site. After thanking him and saying goodbye, we met him again a few minutes later, and he shared personal stories about his job, his son, and his daughter. According to him, the security situation in Geneva isn't very good due to drug trafficking. I was surprised, as I hadn't felt that Geneva was unsafe in Switzerland.

We had originally planned to reach Refuge de la Balme, but since it started to rain lightly and our pace was slow, we set up our tent at the previous campsite. As the sun began to hide behind the mountain, it got progressively colder. It was fine to wear just a T-shirt during the day, but in the evening, I was in a fleece and a soft shell. At night, it was so cold that I had to wear my down jacket. When we arrived at the campsite, there was no one else there, so we set up the tent on the flattest spot. Only one person from the Czech Republic came later. He said he was walking slowly with a 30kg pack.

I had planned to buy more food or eat at a restaurant in the next town (Les Chapieux), but everything was closed. We saw someone at a restaurant and asked if we could buy a drink. They said they were closed but would sell us a large (1.25L) Coke for 5 Euros. We chatted a bit before buying, and as soon as I mentioned I was from Japan, his face lit up. We talked about One Piece, and then he gave us the Coke for free! I was once again grateful to the Japanese people who came before me and built such a good image for the country. I realized I need to continue to be respectful in my behavior. That Coke tasted absolutely amazing. Overseas Coke always seems to be fizzier.

The path from Les Chapieux was paved, and there seemed to be a free shuttle bus in the summer, but, as expected, it wasn't running in October. I was moved by a large, beautiful bird that showed up along the way, and a French person on a bike told me it was a rare species. As we continue to walk, a car came up from behind. I stuck out my thumb, and successfully hitchhiked! An elderly French couple in a Suzuki drove us for about an hour's worth of road walking. If it hadn't been for them, we would have reached the campsite for the day in the pitch dark.

After the road section, we re-entered the hiking trail. This section was covered in beautiful autumn foliage, like a gorgeous carpet. With no one else around, I felt like I had the whole magnificent view to myself.

Climbing up the pass, we finally reached the border between France and Italy. Mont Blanc showed its face again for the first time in a while, and my spirits lifted.

On the Italian side, we started seeing more Italian people and saying Ciao more often. Interestingly, when I greeted a French person on the Italian side with Ciao, he replied with Bonjour, which really highlighted the different national characters.

On the second night, we decided to camp at Cabane du Combal. There were an unusually large number of people, and to my surprise, some were Chinese. It turned out they were doing a photoshoot for a Chinese outdoor brand (I forgot the name when they told me). I spoke to an Italian guide, who seemed to be the coordinator, and he suggested a good tent spot. We set up our tent a little higher up. Since the campsite was at an altitude of 2,000 meters, the night got increasingly cold.

When I woke up the next morning, my tent was frozen. I was thankful and impressed by the continued clear weather as we started hiking. An Italian person who remained at the site asked if I wanted a coffee. Having lived without hot water and then seeing ice on my tent in the morning, his offer was incredibly moving. I had a delicious cup of coffee, and he even offered me cake (crostata). I indulged and had a second cup of coffee. His kindness and the hot water truly warmed my heart.

Throughout the three days, both the French and Italian people were incredibly kind to us, and I vowed not to forget to show kindness to others myself.

As we climbed the next pass, Mont Blanc appeared in all its beauty. We stopped and set up the tent to let it dry. The view was breathtakingly beautiful.

I met a Chinese solo hiker doing the TMB, and she told me the tunnel between Courmayeur and Chamonix was closed (I regretted not checking this). I had planned to buy souvenirs in Chamonix but ended up having to return via the Italian side. There was a lake along the way, where I took a photo of the inverted reflection of Mont Blanc. An Italian person there gave me advice on the best way to return. Due to the rush-trip nature of the hike, I was severely lacking in research, but I was able to gradually fill in the information gaps.

We continued to walk until we finally reached Courmayeur. It was a large town with a beautiful cultural atmosphere. I had pizza in Courmayeur before starting the journey home. Swiss trains run all night on weekends, which is great for students using the Night GA.

Summary

It was a hike where I experienced the magnificence and beauty of the Alps, as well as the kindness of the local people. In October, most facilities are closed, making food resupply difficult, but the lack of people created a free atmosphere where you could practically camp anywhere. Perhaps because the huts were closed, the service spirit of the locals was impressive!.

I should note that the sunny weather this October was unusually persistent. Usually, conditions are not this comfortable, and there would be snow, so caution is necessary.

I wish I could have spoken more than just greetings, so I plan to start learning a non-English language on Duolingo. The lack of pre-hike research, combined with the difficulty of remembering French place names, made conversations about where I had camped challenging.

I'm grateful to my friend for joining me on plan. I think it was a tough first tent-camping experience for him.

I'm so glad I came. And I know I'll be back.
