DAY1
Started the hike from kurobe dam. It took us a while to find the entrance to the hiking trail, which is accessible immediately after you get off the bus. There is an attendant at the beginning of the hike making sure that hikers are properly equipped. The first part of the hike takes you along the Kurobe river, a relatively steep and narrow trail. After descending to the riverbed, the trail follows the river for a while before ascending again. After another descent, the trail reaches the junction of the masago and tsurugi sawas. There is a short bit of via ferrata styled hiking along the river, but nothing too serious. It can be a bit awkward with a big heavy pack.
After walking along the river for a while, we as ended to Sennin Ike where we met up with Mokachan. After talking for a while, we walked over to our campsite at IkeNoTaira. The wifi turns off around 9pm, but it reaches the campground and has great connectivity.
DAY2
We got a 4am start and headed back down to Tsurugi Sawa. The hike had some fun parts, with some big traverses across slab rock faces with rebars drilled into them for footholds. We met Yamakkosan by coincidence, who didn't recognize me at first due to my lack of ski wear 😂. After a short chat, we continued up tsurugisawa to Bessan. We separated here, as I ran over to Bessan and my partner continued to Oyama. I thought I'd catch up, but I had some trouble with one of my backpack zippers and had to fix it. As I walked across the main tateyama Ridgeline, it was fun to see all the lines that I've skied. We finally met up again at Ichinokoshi, and said hi to Umechan before my partner descended and I continued to goshikigahara. The descent from Shishidake was a bit steep. The tent site had many other UL gear users, which was fun.
DAY3
I awoke to the sound of rain. Originally, I was planning to take the boat across the lake to hike harinoki, but I didn't want to do that in this weather, so I decided to walk along the lakeside trail back to the dam. The trail from Goshikigahara down to the lake was not bad, but was a bit rocky and difficult to run. The trail along the lakeside was a bit better, but had a lot of wooden ladders which were very slippery in the rain. I was quite tired and demoralized by the rain and cancelation of my traverse, so to raise my own spirits and keep away the bears, I sang songs out loud. Reaching the dam had a feeling of salvation, and I didn't have to wait long for the next bus.
