The section between Kurobe Lake and Oku Kurobe Hut is CLOSED due to the earthquake. It is possible to cross it, but it is dangerous. It will probably not be repaired this year (and perhaps not next year). |

S-san and I had been planning to traverse the whole N. Alps this summer,
but due to the poor weather, we made do with this 3-day weekend.
Although S-san does not have so much experience in the mountains, he is
a serious athlete (trail runner) sponsored by Salomon, fast, tough, and
great fun to be with.
I dropped my car at Hiedaira (start for Jonen), and we traveled in his
car to Nanakura, yet again. My third time this year! The three-day route
was long (map time of 44 hours), but shorter than the 70 hours that S-san
had first planned….
Reaching the first Funatsubo hut after a comfortable 3 hours, it was fun
to meet Osanpo-san, but without his Wire Fox Terrier. Clearly, he loves
dogs, and Hana loved him, cleaning his salty face. The Nepalese worker
there, Pemba-san, supported the famous Everest Southwest Face climb by
Chris Bonington, the top British climber in the 1070s, and the first
mountain book I ever read. A true honor to meet him, but sad that he has
to come to Japan to earn money.
Beyond the hut, the route was badly damaged. Cracks suggested earthquake
activity. Sure enough, beyond the Kurobe Dam, massive landslides triggered
by the Level 5 earthquake 3 days earlier had destroyed many of the wooden
stairs and railings. The owner of OkuKurobe hut was surprised to see us
arrive “Didn’t you know the route is closed? There are signs everywhere!”
We didn’t know.
Day 2 was a long slog up Akaushi, over Suisho, beyond the now-closed Suisho
hut, over Washiba, and down to Mitsumata, where I had been looking forward
to meeting 2-year-old Koya-kun again. I had promised last time that I would
bring the dog, and he was delighted. A few days later, his mother and
father, who run these two huts, would descend into Azumino for the winter.
We should have camped at Mitsumata, as the mother recommended. Out of the
wind, unlike the col and saddle of Sugoroku, which funnel the cold winds
from every direction onto the tents. We huddled in the hut, eating ramen
and sipping hot sake until it was time for bed.
And then I realized with rising panic that I did not have my car keys!
Damn, damn and damn again.
S-san was very stoic and restrained the next morning as we turned our
backs on Yarigatake, which he has yet to climb, and set off back along
the Noguchi-goro ridge to Eboshi and his car, where my car keys were
waiting. Well, that makes us even at 1-1 after Kaikoma together last year.
Next year, we’ll plan some longer trips together. It was a great weekend.

Hi Hanameizan-san,
Itoh Kei-san, Atsuko-san and Koya-kun of Suisho-hut were just appeared in Today's Asahi evening newspaper.
Kei-san's father is the owner of Mitsumata-hut, Kumonodaira-hut and Suisho-hut.
Also the man wearing Jikatabi you took a picture on the way to Noguchigoro-hut is the son of it's owner.
Is Mt Akaushi nice to run?
Hello mate!!!
I'm always looking forward to read your trip journal every time. It is quite impressive to traverse so fast and taking with your dog.
This time it was very regrettable not to complete your mission, but I am convinced that you will be able to traverse much longer trip than in this time.
Eventually you have found your car key, haven't you?
Thanks for that information! I heard there are two brothers, one runs Suisho, the other runs Mitsumata.
The mother said she wants to return to the valley to put Koya-kun in kindergarten with other kids before he becomes too independent and strange!
I was hoping to meet you by chance around Kurobegawa Genryu, but it seems you went to Daibosatsu instead.
From Okukurobe to Akaushi is awful for running! Huge tree roots to climb up and down. No chance of running. From Akaushi to Suisho, it is much better, with some nice sections. But the best is the route we did, Noguchigoro to Eboshi.
Thank you for your comment and encouragement!
It's such fun to hike with a dog - do you ever take
Sakura-chan?
This time, it was difficult to run because of carrying a rucksack with tent, food, stove etc. I think I prefer to travel light!
Till next time,
